Evans and Sons: Gathen Yard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">In 1888 <\/span><a style=\"font-size: revert;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rwgevans.com\/family\/tree\/ps01\/ps01_068.html\" target=\"tree\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Herbert Evans (1869-1933)<\/a><span style=\"font-size: revert;\"> and his brother\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: revert;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rwgevans.com\/family\/tree\/ps01\/ps01_078.html\" target=\"tree\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Valentine Evans (1881-1967)<\/a><span style=\"font-size: revert;\"> started J.H. Evans and Sons, also known as the Western Wagon Works, later the Western Engineering Works at Gathen Yard,\u00a0 now the site of Gathen Close behind Station Road and Great Western Crescent in Llanelli.\u00a0 They had moved to Llanelli from rural Carmarthenshire where their father had worked on the railways.\u00a0 \u00a0It&#8217;s not clear where the brothers learned their trade but there was a family connection to <\/span><a style=\"font-size: revert;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rwgevans.com\/family\/tree\/ps07\/ps07_471.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Rees (1841- 1914)<\/a><span style=\"font-size: revert;\"> of Broad Oak Saw Mill in Llangathen who was also a wheelwright and coach builder.\u00a0 \u00a0He married their sister <\/span><a style=\"font-size: revert;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rwgevans.com\/family\/tree\/ps01\/ps01_248.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Letitia (1876-1961)<\/a><span style=\"font-size: revert;\"> and the brothers named their works Gathen Yard.\u00a0 According to my father his Uncle Bill had built the wheels for Llanelli&#8217;s first mail coach.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_409\" Herbert&#8217;s son <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rwgevans.com\/family\/tree\/ps01\/ps01_005.html\" target=\"tree\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Griffith Aneurin Evans (1899-1964)<\/a> joined the family business on his return from serving with the Royal Field Artillery in the first world war.\u00a0 \u00a0As demand for coach building declined, the business developed into a welding and foundry business.\u00a0 Griff&#8217;s son <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rwgevans.com\/family\/tree\/ps01\/ps01_016.html\" target=\"tree\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Dewsberry Evans (1940-1994)<\/a> ran the Road and then moved to 12 Great Western Crescent.\u00a0 After Griff&#8217;s death in the sixties, Doris and her sons lived in three adjacent houses on Station Road behind the works: Doris with her sister Muriel in number 130, with my father Gilmour after his divorce, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rwgevans.com\/family\/tree\/ps01\/ps01_015.html\" target=\"tree\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Alan Evans (1935-1985)<\/a> lived above his jewellery and watch repair shop in number 128 and Robert lived with his family in number 126.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_408\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rwgevans.com\/family\/tree\/ps01\/ps01_266.html\" target=\"tree\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evy Thomas (1835-1874)<\/a>, son of a stonecutter, worked as a mason in the tinplate works but died young after inhaling particles of stone. Three of his sons worked in the tinplate industry and his daughter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rwgevans.com\/family\/tree\/ps01\/ps01_188.html\" target=\"tree\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lizzie (1873-1943)<\/a> married another mason\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rwgevans.com\/family\/tree\/ps01\/ps01_070.html\" target=\"tree\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Dewsberry (1874-1926)<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 1888 John Herbert Evans (1869-1933) and his brother\u00a0William Valentine Evans (1881-1967) started J.H.
